As the casino gambling industry in Pennsylvania is in its all-time high, four developers are looking to get in on the action by securing the final gaming license available in the state (at a fee of $12.5 million). Two of them are vying to bring a casino to the Poconos, an already well-established tourist destination, while another group (Penn Harris Gaming L.P.) is proposing to build a casino at a Holiday Inn near Harrisburg. The last applicant, Mason-Dixon Resorts L.P, has been pushing a $75 million casino near the Gettysburg battlefield, but this proposal had been receiving heavy opposition.
The entire Northeast of the USA is experiencing a gaming boom but last December, Pennsylvania casinos had higher slot revenue than New Jersey casinos for the first time ever. “The addition of table games has made Pennsylvania one of the top gaming destinations on the East Coast” Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz stated. Much is at stake as gambling revenue in the state already has exceeded expectations, topping $2 billion over six years, and the potential for more is considered great.
