Nominees for the 2010 Poker Hall of Fame admissions are underway. Until now 181 players have been nominated for Poker Hall of Fame. The two players who earn the most votes automatically will earn their place in the Hall, but if in 2009 Mike Sexton was given poker immortality for having a 75% portion of the vote, this year only 50% is required. Names will be accepted through August 31st and Harrah’s will release the names of the top 10 candidates the next day. The top 10 nominees will be publically named and then a nomination committee will review the picks: “We’ll have a good batch of candidates to mull over and see who gets in”, said World Series of Poker Communications Director Seth Palansky. Finally, in mid-September the 16 living Hall of Famers and a select board will decide who is worthy of enter into the Poker Hall of Fame.
The deciding committee is made up of the 16 living Poker Hall of Fame members and a panel of poker media. The group will then rank those players who they feel are worthy of acceptance into the Hall of Fame. Poker fans, members of the media, and even the players themselves are eligible to submit their nominations for the next batch of entrants online at the official website of the World Series of Poker. According to Harrah’s, the main criteria for entry into the Poker Hall of Fame are that: The player must have played poker against acknowledged top competition, he must have played for high stakes doing consistently well and gaining the respect of their peers. The player must also have stood the test of time. The nominee could also be not a player, but he must have contributed to the overall growth and success of the game of poker, with indelible positive and lasting results. The induction ceremony will take place during the World Series of Poker main event final table weekend at the Rio this November.
